The Itch

Sometimes I get that Itch. The travel bug. It's a dangerous feeling, full of discontent. Go away Itch- I'm not leaving the country anytime soon.

The Wednesday Adventure

Catching up my blog....

Thanks to Andrew Kennedy for planning the Wednesday JC adventure!
(*JC stands for Jerusalem Center- where I studied abroad with 80 of my best friends.)
A small group of us embarked on the most amazing Wednesday adventure of my life. We drove from Provo to Brigham city, picking up more JC stragglers along the way.

This is the crew: from left. Me, Holly, Matthew (andrew's twin- not a JCer. but always welcome) Andrew, Bethany, Jane and Liz.
This was at the golden spike monument- a place I have never been. well there's not much to see. But still cool.

Then we continued along a very rocky path to the SPIRAL JETTY!
the Spiral Jetty is what we call "Earth Works".
It is a large, man-made, rock jetty. These boulders were brought in by a Robert Smithson in the 70s. It is built in the Great Salt lake.
Here is a better view of the jetty, obviously ripped from the internet.

It's pretty cool.
But the shore of the water does not even come close to the jetty now, which is unfortunate. So now it sits on a dry salt bed.
So, I have been to the Great Salt Lake twice before in my life, Both times at Antelope Island. That was cool, but this area of the lake is seriously out of this world. The water is much saltier here. If you have never experienced floating in salt water, you must do it! It is such an amazing feeling! You CANNOT sink. It is impossible. At one point I was floating flat on top of the water with the salt bed approximately 4-6 inches below me, and I could not get any part of my body besides my hands and feet to touch the bottom.

The beach here is straight from a DREAM. First of all, the whole area is covered in a salt bed, which appears to be warm snow. Now who doesn't dream of a world full of warm snow? The lake is full of this red algae, so when you are standing on the shore the water is pink for about 15 feet in front of you then it fades into a glorious blue. But when you walk out into the water the Pink color follows you. The angle at which you are looking at the water catches the algae's color. Swiming in a pool of pink water is.... undescribable. Close your eyes and imagine it!

This water is covered in little floating puddles of foam.
The salt crystalizes in cube shapes, so little square crystals float on the surface and intrude very squarely in the foam clouds. We didn't take a camera out this far, but my "paint" skill will describe it like this:When you reach your hands down you pick up little crystals like these:
They float flat side up, like inverted triangles.

They look incredibly like these pyramids:
(someday I will go here.)

Dodging the crystals was, of course, impossible. But I felt like I was playing a very long game of Ipod touch cube runner:
Ok, so it was a pretty dream-like out of this world experience, but there are some downsides of swiming in bodies of salt water. At the G.S.L. the water is covered in tiny salt crystals that completely cover you. They are super sharp. My fingers have about 100 tiny cuts from touching the bottom of the lake while floating in the water, in addition to the many cuts i have on my feet and knees, and anything that touched the rough salt bed. Also, In the Dead sea, it is like swiming in pins and needles. Especially on your legs where you have shaved! The high concentration of salt is extremely poisionous and slightly burns your skin.

My adventure at the Spiral Jetty was unbelievable. The experience was so similar to swiming in the dead sea, it was only appropraite to come here with JC people. Here is a comparison list that is only semi-comfusing:

THE DEAD SEA ---------THE GREAT SALT LAKE
Overall experience:
Amazing- but not
enough time------- Hours of pure (painful) Joy

Boyancy:
Very boyant
-----------Just Slightly less boyant

Burning from Salt:
Pretty unbearable -------------Not so Bad

Pain from sharp crystals:
None -----------Pretty terrible.

Scenery:
Well, you are in Israel! But not a ton to see. -------
Amazing pink water!

Small extras:
In the sun you could see
geometric patterns glistening on the top of the water. -----Pink water!

Smell
BAD
-----------Only bad at parts.

Which I would rather repeat:
Not really -----------
YES

Company:
Lovely JCers
---------Lovely JCers

Stories involving my best JC friend Bethany:
Reading a book while floating in water.------ Ask me in person. But the SL WINS!

The taste you accidentally get on your lips:
DISGUSTING ---------
Not too Bad

The accidental splash in the eye:
never experienced it,
but people had to spit in each other's eyes.------Had to cry the salt out.

The lasting effects of this trip were salting tasing skin, small cuts and bruises, and fantastic memories. My advice: Go to the Spiral Jetty!

haircuts can be traumatic.

Ok, so this is a story from a few months that I remembered today while getting my bangs cut.

Sitting and waiting for your haircut is never this eventful. But the last time I sat in this specific chair, the same one I sat in today, I may or may not have changed the course of One Kid's life forever.

Yikes.

So this little girl sitting next to me is waiting for her dad to finish his hair cut. I chatted with her. She was six. She said her mommy was buying makeup.
Then continued: "Are you a mommy?"
I laughed and said, "No, but someday I will be!"
"Then why are you wearing makeup?"
UH Oh
I realize that her mom tells her that only mommys wear makeup because she doesn't want her six year old daughter to want to wear any. Now I think an appropriate response might have been something like, "Well, because I am old enough to wear makeup."
Instead I said:
"Because if I don't wear makeup I'll never be a mommy."

And that is the moment I turned a cute little girl like this:

Into this:

Crap.
I guess it happened to all of us at some point or another.

*Disclaimer: all of these pictures are merely from search engines. They are not of anyone i know. And I certainly didn't take them. I did however take the following picture:

Random Old Picture of the Day:

Thousands of words that need to be shared.

It's time for more Old pictures and memories.
Today I was remembering my trip to California.
Look at these two awesome friends.
We had such an amazing time.
This picture was taken minutes after Justin (in the C2G yellow) threw his cell phone into the ocean.
These boys had just taken me to H&M which may be the best store in the world. I repeat, what great friends. Justin is getting married in a couple weeks to the lovely Nancy. And Adam is off being very MIA in Texas. I'm sure I'll see him in a few weeks when school starts.
We had some adventures.

And this was the best place we went:

The San Diego Temple.
"G envy."-Drea.
Someday I will go inside.
I can't wait.
And another day I will Get married here:

TIMP! I am all about timp! I love love this place!

Tasty Face.

This week I am experimenting with different homemade face masks. My skin has been less than adequate in appearance, so I am trying to change that. I feel like store bought products are often overrated and too harsh for my skin. So I am sitting here with Honey, egg and oatmeal smeared all over my face and I look like a Zombie from the Thriller Music video:

Ok, well not quiiiite like that. But I do look ridiculous.

Yesterday I tried just oatmeal and Honey and it worked wonders, definitely better than anything that I ever bought in the skin care isle for 9.99.

The earth is an amazing place. Sometimes I feel like Rousseau got it right. Maybe we should all return to nature. I heard that if you walk on grass barefoot for a few minutes every day it releases static built up in your body, and you will sleep better. The rubber in your shoes prevents the electricity from leaving your body. I Don't know if this is true, But not like it'll hurt anyone to try it. Sometimes I ask myself if Humans were ever supposed to move inside. Maybe I will go live in a Tepee. I could walk on grass every day and grow my own oats and raise my own honey bees to make my face masks. This Tepee version of myself would probably be very content, and have great skin, but worn out all the time.

Ok I don't really want to live in a Teepee. But I do love Nature, and I think there is something to Rousseaus ideas.

These are some of my favorite nature pics:

The place of St. Peter's Primacy, on the sea of galilee. This is where Christ told Peter three times to "feed my sheep"

I love Cherry Blossems. Springtime is so beautiful. This is a hidden feild behind the Cathedral in Conques, in Southern France. It was a place discovered only by me, while we had a few miniutes of free time. All of the other girls spent their free time waiting in line for the WC.

More than just a bad joke. TheB's

This weekend was all about the B's. Boating, and Blind Man's Bluff. (The letter B also applies to the scores I am probably going to get on my finals this week.)

On Saturday the ward went boating. I'm not a huge water person. But, I refused to chicken out at all. (well, it's not like I wake boarded or anything.) But I got thrown and flown off of the tubes. It was super fun and I really love my C-wood ward.
This is Yuba Reservoir where we went. It was a very nice, but not quite as dramatic as this picture makes it look!
It was super fun, but Bro. Dunn is a fearsome driver. I've never been thrown out of a tube so many times.
My hands were so sore from holding on to the raft handles that I could not pick up the stapler at work to staple each receipt like I usually do. (this prevents clogging.) I had to use it like a normal stapler that actually works and rests on the counter. The good news is, It didn't get jammed.

Today, I took a lovely long nap at the park. I love Sundays.
When I woke up, and the sun had moved dramatically, and I came home with a nice sunburn on the back of my legs.

Tonight we (meaning the wardies) played a sweet round of Blind Man's Bluff, or a simpler title is "Lava". If you were ever the age of eight, you have played this game. It's just tag on the jungle gym, and the lucky "it" person keeps their eyes closed. And, of course, you can't touch the ground!
It is the best game ever. You can swing all around the jungle gym.
In elementary school I was always the kid that was "It" for fifteen minutes because I was never quick enough to catch anyone, but the times have changed. I am more daring now and I love this game.

** To do- attempt the jump between the long curly slide and the staircase at the scera playground.

Tonight I received only mild Lava injuries. Only a short fall and a few tumbles. Ok a few pulled muscels too.

I hurt pretty much everywhere. It has been an amazing weekend!

I feel like this post was all about me. Well, I guess it is my Blog, but next time I will blog about something else

xoxo,
Love from the Land of black and blue and red all over.

Blank.

Today I bought the most massive canvas I have ever even thought about painting on.

My roommate Vanessa is moving out, and taking with her all of her large artwork that adorns out living room. I want to get a jump on decorating the empty space before I have three new mystery roommates moving in. I would like a nice apartment please. It's bad enough out couches are an awful plaid. Love Love this place.

Wish me luck!

MMMummMMM

Today I finally got to eat Zupas. I have been craving it like nobody's business! Now I am happy :)

The last time I went to Zupas I was with Camille and we ditched Aaron and Brandon who were waiting for us, saving seats in the dollar movies. We were upset because they didn't pay for us. Can you say Laaame. And we were mislead and didn't get a chance to eat. So they sat alone in the dark theater while we ran across the parking lot to go on the date that we should have been on.

To Do..

I want chips. You know. The Lime kind. They are super good. That is what I want right now.
I found a bunch of my old change at my parents house. there was 10 bucks in quarters, dimes, nickels and pennys. Maybe I will go buy chips.

Last night I had a dream that I came home to find my mom reading CosmoGirl. I don't think that will ever happen. How many times can I say ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever!

Someone please google CosmoGirl and see what pops up. Please take the "Why don't I have a boyfriend quiz."

http://www.cosmogirl.com/guys/quizzes/why-dont-you-have-boyfriend

I couldn't resist.
You will find questions like these:
"your older sister takes you to a party while visiting her at college. Where can she find you?"
"you totally rocked your SATs! Who do you tell?"
This crap is priceless.
Apparently I don't have a boyfriend because "I am booked!"
Well that's a relief.

What i really should be doing is much less interesting. I need to be writing a paper on this:
One page done. Two to go.
Not Bad.

I don't understand how this qualifies as a "small picture"

xoxo
